Salvatore Capezio, born in 1871 in Muro Lucano, Italy, did not follow in his father's footsteps as a construction engineer. Instead, he became a skilled cobbler, opening his shop on Broadway and 39th Street in New York City in 1887, at the age of 17. The shop soon became a meeting place for dancers, who would visit to discuss their needs and purchase his shoes.
